Letter: Smoker: Bring on the cigarette tax

Jump to full article: Marysville (CA) Appeal-Democrat, 2009-04-05Author: Kevin Perez ChicoPosted By: Cigs By Mail.com

Intro:
I'm a smoker, and I agree with the tax increase. According to Frank Lester, spokesman for Reynolds American, 1 in 4 smokers lives at or below the poverty line. If this is the case, I highly doubt these same people, including myself, have world-class health insurance. . . .
Smoking is addictive, no doubt, but why in the world should anyone else be responsible for the cost of my demise? At my own hands no less. Why not let us pay a higher price, so that when we finally kick the bucket, we will have made a dent, albeit a small one, in the out-of-control costs we will have left behind?
Obviously we live in a pay-as-you-go world. Why should this be any different?

Students urge lawmakers to raise tobacco tax

Anti-smoking programs paid for by settlement funds put on a showJump to full article: Honolulu Advertiser, 2009-02-28Author: Suzanne RoigPosted By: Cigs By Mail .com – The Discount cigarette store offering Free Shipping…

Intro:
Chanting anti-tobacco slogans and listening to slam poetry, a group of 150 students from around the state gathered at the state Capitol yesterday lobbying for higher taxes on tobacco products.

"Other tobacco products have to go," they chanted, referring to chewing tobacco and other non-cigarette products. "Youth speaks," they said.
As lawmakers were poised yesterday to discuss several measures that would affect the tobacco settlement yesterday -- a critical source of funds for their anti-smoking programs -- the students wanted to remind lawmakers that they shouldn't be tempted to tap into anti-smoking funds to balance the budget, or they'd risk affecting the success of anti-smoking campaigns.

"We're here today because they are talking about raiding the funds and it will affect many of our programs in the Kalihi area," said Lavelle Ramos-Dias, a Kokua Kalihi Valley health educator. "The fund is for us. If they raid it, it won't be there."

Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona praised their efforts to get the message out.
"You have made some significant gains in the (lower) number of smokers in the last seven years," Aiona told the gathering. "The fight is not over."
Aiona proclaimed yesterday as Kick Butts Day

Senators pull cigarette tax off table

Intro:
Senate Republicans have rejected an increase in the cigarette tax sought by Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. to help close the state's massive budget shortfall, Senate Majority Leader Sheldon Killpack said Friday.
"We're saying no to the governor on that," Killpack, R-Syracuse, said. "There's not interest in that." Without the support of the majority caucus, there's little chance the $1.50-a-pack increase could pass.
Nor will much else. "You have to have some desire to find another tax increase," Killpack said. "I don't know that there's a tremendous desire to raise another tax at this point."

Intro: Health officials may relax the state's new ban on indoor smoking in response to lawyers' complaints about rules against lighting up in hotel bars. Judy Ochs, director of the state Health Department's Division of Tobacco Prevention and Control, said the department is doing a legal review after attorneys for about a dozen hotels called to challenge the ban. Trey Matheu, general manager of a western Pennsylvania resort that now prohibits smoking in its cigar bar because of the new law, said he hopes the state will relent without a protracted court battle. . . .

Hotel bars weren't explicitly covered by the legislation, and Ochs said the Health Department now is trying to figure out what to do with them. So far, she said, more than 300 hotels with liquor licenses have applied to have their bars exempt. The state denied more than 200 of those requests, and still is deciding on some.

Cigarette Manufactures have started raising prices well before April

Posted By: Cigs By Mail.com – The Discount Cigarette Store

President Obama signed the SCHIP bill on Wednesday, which is being paid for by raising the federal cigarette tax by $6.40 per carton. Additionally, it has been reported that cigarette manufactures may also raise prices to help recoup lost income due to the higher tax.

Cigarette Manufactures have started raising prices well before April 1st, and will continue in stages rather than all at once. On a positive note, this may help prevent a run on cigarettes leading to shortages, which could happen if the increase happens all at once on April 1st

Tobacco gradually losing its political sway

Tobacco gradually losing its political sway As health concerns cause public opinion to change, even tobacco states such as N.C. take harder stance Jump to full article: Winston-Salem (NC) Journal, 2009-02-02Author: James Romoser * Journal Reporter

Intro:"Our consumers certainly face an increasingly finite number of situations, whether they be social situations or work situations, where they feel comfortable smoking," said Maura Payne, a spokeswoman for Reynolds American Inc.

Changing social views of smoking are accompanied by dwindling political support for tobacco companies. For years, Reynolds and the other major tobacco players enjoyed a sort of home-field advantage in North Carolina politics. But 2009 is shaping up to be a tough year for tobacco in the nation's largest tobacco-producing state. . . .

North Carolina's policymakers are increasingly arguing that the health hazards of smoking outweigh the state's important tobacco heritage.
"I know that this state has a rich history of growing tobacco, and we love our farmers and we respect them," said state Rep. Jennifer Weiss, D-Wake. But, she added, "this is about the health and safety of workers in our state."
Weiss was referring to the proposed smoking ban in indoor workplaces. The bill's chief author is Rep. Hugh Holliman, D-Davidson, a survivor of lung cancer. Jump to full article

Your money up in smoke

Incentive to kick the habit could be in your wallet

Author: JESSE HELLING, Messenger staff writer

Intro:
A pack of Marlboro cigarettes sells for $5.09, plus tax, at a local convenience store. That means that someone who swings by on their way to work each morning is shelling out more than $25.45 per week. Add in the weekends and the price goes up to $35.63.

At this price, a pack-a-day smoker would spend more than $1,857.85 over the course of a year, enough for round-trip airfare for two to see Marlboros being made in Richmond, Va.

If they start at the legal age of 18, by the time they hit 30, they've spent more than $22,294.20 - plenty to buy nine 50-inch plasma screen televisions.
By age 65, one pack of cigarettes a day adds up to $87,300.15, meaning a smoker would have spent enough to send their grandchild to college. . . .
Economic impact, as well as raising awareness of health issues, are two means by which the American Cancer Society hopes to convince people to quit smoking.

A recent $1-per-pack tax increase on cigarettes has been cited by legislators as a means to diminish smoking in Iowa. Smoking rates among Iowa adults dropped from 21.4 percent in 2006 to 19.4 percent in 2007, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Today is the 33rd Great American Smoke-Out, an event organized by the American Cancer Society.
